The position dot in the center of the 'X' in the left column, as well as the guide lines along the right edge of the proof are remnants of the siderographer's work -- indications that this is a plate proof and not a cut down die proof. 

As this is considered by many to be the first U.S. mourning stamp, it remains food for thought as to why the stamp was tested in colors other than black.
