Making Money
The American Bank Note Company

This article, from Harper's Monthly Magazine, February, 1862, provides a wealth of insight into the operations of The American Bank Note Company.

Although the title of the article is indeed "Making Money", most of the Company's operations described in this article are relevant to stamp production: engraving and hardening operations, gumming and perforating operations, cycloidal lathe operation, paper accounting, ink manufacture, and many others. Furthermore, the article is illustrated with fascinating bookplate illustrations.

Navigating the Book...

The "e-book" begins by presenting miniature images of each page. Clicking the edges of the book will "turn" the page. Clicking on the center of a page will open a new window revealing a much larger, highly readable scan of that page with its accompanying (and quite marvelous) bookplate illustrations.

Each scanned page provides the text in its proper orientation. However, some of the illustrations were printed sideways. In most cases, clicking on a sideways image will open another window, showing the illustration in its proper orientation.

Since the file sizes of these scanned pages are rather large, you have the option of selecting from two sets of scans according to the speed of your Internet connection:

--> up to 56K
(smaller images, faster downloading, yet still very readable text)

--> DSL/Cable Modem
(larger images, best quality of readable text and illustrations)
